How an email list helps a small business

An email list is a way to stay in touch with people who already know your business. It costs less than ads, and you own it. Here is why it matters and how to start.

1. You own the list

Social media followers live on someone else's platform. If the platform changes the rules, your reach drops overnight. An email list is yours. You can take it with you if you switch tools.

2. People who sign up already want to hear from you

An email list is not cold calling. Every person on it chose to be there. That means they are more likely to read what you send and more likely to buy.

3. Automatic emails save time

Set up a short welcome series: one email when someone signs up, one a few days later, one a week later. Each email can answer a common question, share a tip, or link to a page on your site. You write them once, and they go out by themselves.

4. You do not need a big list to start

Even 20 or 30 real subscribers are worth more than a bought list of thousands. Start with a simple signup form on your website and mention it on your business card or receipt.

5. Follow the rules

Email law (CAN-SPAM in the U.S.) says you must include your business address and an unsubscribe link in every email. Only email people who signed up. Any good email tool handles these for you.

6. Keep it short and useful

Nobody wants a novel in their inbox. One short email a month with a tip, a reminder or a small offer is plenty. If every email is a sales pitch, people will unsubscribe.
